Oregon Halibut Fishing

Pacific Halibut Season (May-June)

Oregon Halibut Fishing

Oregon halibut fishing off the Pacific coast of Newport is one of the most exciting and rewarding fishing experiences on the West Coast. Every year, people come from all over, Alaska, Washington, and even California, for a shot at catching one of these amazing fish. It is not only about fishing, though. It is about the whole experience, the challenge, and the chance to reel in something seriously impressive.

In the spring and early summer, halibut start moving up from the deep ocean to areas that are closer to the surface. They hang out around offshore banks, reefs, and other underwater spots, which makes it a great time for anglers to go after them. Because of this seasonal movement, the fish are easier to reach than they are during other times of the year, giving anglers a better shot at catching one.

Halibut are well-known for a couple of big reasons. First, they can get really big and are super strong, so catching one feels like a great accomplishment. Second, they taste amazing and are considered some of the best fish you can eat, so they are just as rewarding when you get home as they are to catch. Even though Oregon does not usually have the giant halibut you hear about in Alaska, the fish here are still seriously impressive. Most of them weigh between 20 and 40 pounds, and it is pretty common to catch one over 60 pounds, which is still really big by most standards.

Halibut fishing is not always super fast-paced. It takes patience and a little bit of strategy. A lot of the time, you are waiting, keeping an eye on your gear, and hoping for the right moment. But when a halibut finally bites, everything changes right away. The hit is strong and hard to miss; you will instantly know you have hooked something powerful. That quick burst of action after all the waiting is what makes halibut fishing so exciting and keeps people coming back year after year.

Halibut Fishing Gear

Halibut Fishing Gear

When you are getting ready for your trip, you will get to choose between two types of halibut fishing gear: a traditional rod and reel or a more advanced electric reel. The one you pick really depends on what you are comfortable with and how involved you want to be during the trip.

Electric reels can make things a lot easier, especially since halibut are usually caught in deep water. Instead of reeling your line up again and again by hand, the electric reel does most of the work for you. This is very helpful when you are checking your bait or pulling your line back up, and it helps you avoid getting too tired so you can stay focused and enjoy your time out on the water.

That said, if you are someone who enjoys the full experience of fighting a fish the traditional way, you do not have to miss out. A lot of anglers use the electric reel just to make things easier, for example, checking bait, and then switching it to manual mode when it is time to reel in a fish. This way, you still get that exciting, hands-on fight when you hook one of these big, powerful fish.

At the end of the day, it is all about making the charter your own. Whether you want something easier on your arms or a more traditional fishing challenge, you can pick the setup that works best for you and enjoy both the convenience and the excitement of being out on the water.

Halibut Fishing Charters

Halibut Fishing Charters

Our Oregon halibut fishing charters start super early, usually before the sun even comes up. You will meet at the dock in the early morning while everything is still quiet and calm, and get ready to head out. It might seem really early, but there is a good reason for it.

Once everyone is on board, the boat heads out to the fishing grounds, which are usually about 1 to 1.5 hours offshore. During the ride, you will get to watch the sunrise on the ocean, which is a pretty awesome way to start the day. It also gives the crew time to go over tips, get all the gear ready, and make sure everyone feels comfortable before the fishing starts.

Heading out early is not only about avoiding crowds; it also gives you a better shot at having a successful charter. The ocean is usually calmer in the morning, and the fish are often more active, which can really help when you are trying to catch halibut. Beginning your day this way sets the vibe for the whole charter and puts you in a great position to make the most of your time out on the water.
